‘Squad’ member Cori Bush under investigation for misuse of government funds: Report

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), a prominent member of “the Squad,” is reportedly under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly misusing government funds that were meant for personal security.

The grand jury subpoena was delivered to the House of Representatives on Monday, although the document did not specify who the subpoena was for or what charges were being investigated. It was later reported the subpoena was issued to Bush for the alleged misuse of federal security money, according to Punchbowl News.

Democratic leaders declined to comment when pressed for details on Tuesday, with Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) telling reporters that information would need to come from the Justice Department. The DOJ declined to comment to the Washington Examiner when asked for a statement on Tuesday.

All House members are allocated a representational allowance of $25,000 to pay for personal security when the lawmakers are not present at the Capitol. That money can be used to pay for security at member-hosted events in their districts, at events in which they are performing official duties, or at their district offices during official business hours.

Bush has been known to spend thousands of dollars on personal security through her campaign committee, making up her biggest campaign expense. The Squad member has also come under scrutiny for some of those payments after facing an ethics complaint last year alleging she made campaign payments to her now-husband for security services during the 2022 midterm cycle.

A spokesperson for Bush did not respond to a request for comment by the Washington Examiner.
