Team USA gets Olympic gold in figure skating two years late after Russian skater disqualified

The International Skating Union announced on Tuesday the United States would be elevated to the gold medal in the team figure skating event for the 2022 Winter Olympics after Russian skater Kamila Valieva was disqualified for doping violations.

The ISU’s amended results come a day after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Valieva would be ineligible for events for four years following her positive test for trimetazidine on Dec. 25, 2021, including the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, in February 2022. With Valieva’s disqualification, the U.S. moves to first place, Japan moves to second place, and the Russian Olympic Committee drops from first place to third place.

U.S. Figure Skating celebrated the decision late Monday, ahead of the announcement, saying it is “extremely proud” of its skaters’ “excellence on and off the ice.” The graphic also included the words “integrity” and “excellence,” in an apparent jab at the ROC, which has been embroiled in several doping scandals dating back to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The medals for the team figure skating event were not awarded during the 2022 Winter Olympics after reports that Valieva had tested positive for a banned substance.

The International Olympic Committee said in a statement it is “now in a position to award the medals in accordance with the ranking” and that it will coordinate with the National Olympic Committee to “organize a dignified Olympic medal ceremony.”

“The IOC welcomes the fact that the CAS ruling provides clarity in this case, and the athletes from the team figure skating competition at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 can finally get their medals, for which they have been waiting so long,” the IOC said in a statement on Monday.

The two-year wait for the medals will come to an end for the American, Japanese, and Russian skaters, but not without controversy.

Canada, which finished in fourth place in the event, said it was “extremely disappointed” with the ISU’s decision not to implement Rule 353 and move up the ranking of skaters who finished behind Valieva in the two segments she competed in.

The ISU has opted to wipe the 10 points awarded to the ROC from two sets Valieva competed in, women’s short program and free skate, off the board, rather than upgrade the points awarded to skaters who finished behind her.

With the decision not to elevate the points awarded in those events, Canada finishes with 53 points, rather than 55 points, keeping it behind the ROC, which finished with 54 without Valieva’s points.

“Skate Canada strongly disagrees with the ISU’s position on this matter and will consider all options to appeal this decision,” the Canadian skating body said in a statement.

With the upgraded finish in the team figure skating event, the U.S. finished the 2022 Winter Olympics with nine gold medals, nine silver medals, and seven bronze medals, for a total of 25.
