Bethany Hamilton to join Riley Gaines at Missouri library promoting new book

Surfer Bethany Hamilton will join Riley Gaines, a former athlete and advocate to protect women’s sports, at a Missouri library on Friday, where the two will promote Gaines’s new children’s book.

The book Gaines and Hamilton will promote, Happy No Snakes Day, teaches “the importance of standing up for the truth.” Hamilton, who survived a shark attack in 2003 before returning to surfing, is one of the growing number of women athletes who have spoken out against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

“I can’t wait to read my brand new children’s book, Happy No Snakes Day, in the great state of Missouri this Friday with Bethany Hamilton!” Gaines wrote on social media. “Friends near Springfield & Branson, we hope to see you there!”

On Monday, Hamilton stated on social media that “male-bodied athletes” should not be partaking in women’s sports. Her statement was made only a few days after Rip Curl, a surfing retailer, shared social media posts online featuring a biological male who identifies as a woman.

Male-bodied athletes should not be competing in female sports. Period.

Hamilton was also featured in various ads for Rip Curl before parting ways with the retailer in November. The split came roughly nine months after Hamilton spoke out against the World Surf League’s adoption of the International Surfing Association’s transgender policy.
