Dean Phillips pleads to Wisconsin Supreme Court to be put on the battleground state’s ballot

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who is running against President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, filed a petition with the Wisconsin Supreme Court for his name to be added to the state’s ballot ahead of the April 2 primary.

The Biden challenger claims he was unlawfully excluded from the battleground state’s ballot by the Wisconsin Presidential Preference Selection Committee and the Wisconsin Election Commision, which only included Biden’s name despite asserting Phillips met the state’s ballot access standards. The standards say that a candidate has to be “generally advocated or recognized in the national news media,” per the Associated Press

“As we fight Trump’s attacks on democracy we must also be vigilant against efforts by people in our own Party to do the same,” the long-shot candidate said in a statement Monday. “Voters should choose the nominee of our Party without insiders trying to rig the process for Joe Biden.”

Phillips is asking the Wisconsin Election Commission to add him to the ballot as a certified candidate. Otherwise, he said, he would have to spend his resources on garnering signatures for a petition.

The high court answered Phillips’s challenge and gave the committee, election commission, and nonparties a Wednesday deadline to present arguments, the outlet reported.

Biden beat out his competitors through a successful write-in effort at the New Hampshire primary last week, defeating Phillips by 34 points.
