James Biden to testify to Congress in February

James Biden will appear for a closed-door interview with House lawmakers in three weeks as Republicans press forward with their impeachment inquiry into his brother, President Joe Biden.

James Biden agreed after weeks of negotiations to meet with the House committees on Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means for the interview on Feb. 21, according to an announcement Wednesday from the Oversight Committee.

The news of his testimony comes after the committees also secured a deposition with Joe Biden’s son Hunter, which is scheduled to take place one week later, on Feb. 28.

Republicans are investigating allegations that Joe Biden was involved in his family’s business ventures, particularly in those of Hunter Biden and James Biden, and that he abused his political influence when he was vice president to help them profit.

Lawmakers have interviewed numerous witnesses and reviewed thousands of bank records and found instances where James Biden received money originating from domestic and foreign entities for no clear reason.

On two of those occasions, James Biden subsequently wrote checks labeled as loan repayments to Joe Biden in 2017 and 2018, which Republicans say is a sign that the president may have benefited from James Biden’s business activity. There is, however, evidence the checks were indeed legitimate loans, as financial documents show a bank account associated with Joe Biden did loan James Biden money. The reasons for the two loans are unknown.

One of the apparent loan repayments to Joe Biden was for $200,000 and came after James Biden received a payment for that same amount from a healthcare company called Americore.

Americore, which went bankrupt, had paid James Biden more than half a million dollars under the promise that the younger Biden would use his prominent last name to secure funding in the Middle East for the company. He never delivered on that promise, according to a bankruptcy trustee.

The trustee sued James Biden in 2022 to claw back the funds for Americore, and the lawsuit ended in a settlement agreement.
