Oklahoma elementary school principal resigns over drag queen past

An elementary school in Oklahoma had its principal resign after it was revealed he had a past drag queen persona.

Dr. Shane Murnan is no longer the principal at John Glenn Elementary School as of Friday. Murnan was also known as “Shantel Mandalay,” a performer impersonating a female. Before he was hired in June 2023, while in drag, Murnan would reportedly read to young children for story time.

Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters discovered Murnan’s other persona on X, thanks to a post from Libs of TikTok. Walters celebrated Murnan’s resignation, which came after weeks of being placed on administrative leave.

“The drag queen is out at Western Heights. I’ve demanded it from day one,” Walters said in a video Friday. “It will not be tolerated here in Oklahoma to have drag queens in the classroom.”

According to Walters, parents from across the state were concerned about Murnan’s hiring. The superintendent confirmed that an open investigation remains into the hiring practices at the Western Heights School District.

It remains to be seen who will replace Murnan, as he is still listed as the principal on the school’s website.
