Super Bowl 2024: San Francisco 49ers quarterback shares Bible passage he reads ‘every single day’

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy revealed in a recent interview that he reads a passage in the Bible “every single day” to support him through his time on the football field.

When asked which scripture passages he has read this football season, Purdy said it was Psalm 23, which reminds him that he already has “what I need from the Good Shepherd and Jesus.”

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I have what I need,” Purdy said, reciting the passage. “He lets me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters.”

The quarterback added that he reads Psalm 23 “every single day” when he starts his day off in order to begin it “with some solitude.”

Purdy was also asked if he prays during any of the football games, as his father has said he prays whenever he watches his son play. Purdy said yes, noting that he does not pray for his team to win but rather for peace and steadfastness amid “all the chaos” on the field.

“That’s really what it is,” Purdy said. “And sink it back into like ‘Holy Spirit, you know, take over and lead me here in this moment and allow me to think clearly, allow me to, you know, obviously go through my reads.’ And like I said, just have an even-keeled state of mind that I get from [the] Holy Spirit.”

Purdy is not the only Super Bowl player this year to share his Christian faith. Marquez Valdes-Scantling said Monday that his faith “won’t ever be not talked about enough,” adding that “Jesus Christ is king.”
