CPAC scores ‘chainsaw’ Argentine President Javier Milei – Washington Examiner

The “lion of the Andes,” Argentine President Javier Milei, is traveling to Washington next weekend to speak at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference convention and is the second populist Latin leader whom organizers will showcase to the thousands of Republican activists.

He will join El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele at the four-day event that is also expected to feature former President Donald Trump, who is making his record-setting 14th appearance.

The populist presidents won big with promises to reform their governments and bureaucracies dramatically. Bukele was reelected this month with an estimated 85% of the vote. Milei won in November with over 55% of the vote.

Both are also popular among American Hispanics, and their message to the CPAC is expected to be watched closely. Milei and Trump are scheduled to speak on Saturday, Feb. 24.

CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp revealed Milei’s visit to his conference to Secrets on Thursday and said, “We are immensely gratified that President Javier Milei of Argentina will address the activists at CPAC. Mercy [Schlapp] and I had the honor of meeting President Milei at CPAC Mexico as he was beginning his historic campaign, and we believe he has captured the spirit of those who see the treachery of globalist elites. American patriots are rooting for him to succeed, and we also like the chainsaw.”

During his campaign for president of the economically troubled South American country, Milei would often rev a chainsaw to demonstrate what his approach to the bureaucracy and inflation-boosting government spending would be. It isn’t known if he will bring his chainsaw to CPAC.

It is unclear if Milei will meet with President Joe Biden during his stop in Washington. The Argentine Embassy did not respond to a question about his plans.

Milei was in Rome this week and met with Pope Francis.

CPAC runs from Feb. 21-24 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.

The conventions have attracted up to 10,000 and are especially influential during presidential campaign years. Often, top GOP politicians and activists present audiences with their issue blueprint for the fall elections.

Getting both to speak, as well as Trump, is a coup for Schlapp, who has expanded his grassroots group overseas. He recently held conventions in Europe and Latin America, as well as around the country.
