Dean Phillips lays off campaign staff but isn’t dropping out of the race – Washington Examiner

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) announced he was laying off staff from his insurgent presidential primary challenge against President Joe Biden.

But he remained adamant he wasn’t dropping out of the race just yet.

Phillips claimed it was “hard to raise money” as a candidate who is defying the Democratic Party in a more than three-minute video posted to X Friday evening.

“But I found it almost impossible to raise enough to do this campaign the way I want,” he said. “And today, sadly, I had to announce layoffs to a lot of my staff members. Amazing people who gave up a lot personally and a lot professionally to join this remarkable campaign. And it was a really tough day for all of us.”

After losing the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries to Biden, Phillips said he wasn’t exiting the race.

“So if you still believe that change is possible, and you still believe that we can do better please consider investing in our campaign,” Phillips urged his supporters. “I’m going to continue this journey as long as you want this journey continued.”

His campaign confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Phillips is not dropping out via email on Saturday morning.

Biden handily defeated Phillips in New Hampshire, winning 64% of the vote, despite not appearing on the ballot. Granite State Democrats staged a write-in campaign for Biden to avoid any embarrassing headlines if Phillips had won.

The president then defeated Phillips and Democrat Marianne Williamson in South Carolina, drawing 96.2% of votes. Phillips finished in a distant third place at 1.7% support.

The Minnesota Democrat launched his campaign to offer voters turned off by another rematch between Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Phillips claims thousands of voters have told him they are “frustrated, frankly, with both parties.”

“They can’t believe that we’re going to have a rematch potentially from 2020,” he said. “They are disgusted by Donald Trump. They cannot believe that Joe Biden thinks he’s going to serve through January of 2029.”
