Nikki Haley blasts Trump for silence on Navalny’s death – Washington Examiner

Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley bashed former President Donald Trump for his apparent silence following the death of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny.

Navalny, a chief critic of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, was announced dead earlier this week. Many have presumed that the 47-year-old opposition leader’s death was an assassination at the hands of the Putin regime. Haley on Sunday lambasted Trump for not speaking out in the wake of Navalny’s demise.

“It’s actually pretty amazing … the fact that he won’t acknowledge anything with Navalny,” the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on ABC’s This Week. “Either he sides with Putin and thinks it’s cool that Putin killed one of his political opponents, or he just doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal.”

“Either one of those is concerning. Either one of those is a problem. We’ve got to start seriously having a conversation in America about our national security,” Haley added.

The Trump campaign has argued that the former president has indeed already put out a statement about Navalny’s death, although the statement doesn’t mention either Putin, Navalny, or Russia by name.

“In just three and a half years under Crooked Joe Biden, the World has experienced Misery, Destruction, and Death,” Trump posted on social media. “America is no longer respected because we have an incompetent president who is weak and doesn’t understand what the World is thinking.”

“I am the only one who can bring Peace, Prosperity, and Stability like I did during my first term. America will be respected and feared (if necessary!) again,” he continued.

Haley, who also served as governor of South Carolina, additionally hit Trump for his comments about NATO, which garnered much attention last week.

During a rally in South Carolina, Trump said that when he was president, he warned NATO allies that he “would encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” if they were delinquent on their financial commitments to the alliance.

“You don’t pay your bills; you get no protection. It’s very simple,” Trump said.

Haley on Sunday called Trump’s remarks “bone-chilling” and accused the former president of siding with Putin.

“Right now, Putin is feeling more emboldened than he ever has,” Haley said.
