State of the Union 2024: ‘Squad’ members don’t clap during Biden’s entrance – Washington Examiner

Several Democratic members of Congress in the progressive “Squad” declined to clap for President Joe Biden when he entered the House chamber for his State of the Union address.

Most members of Congress stood up and clapped when the president entered the chamber, but members of the progressive group, some of whom were wearing Palestinian keffiyehs, did not.

Reps. Cori Bush (D-MO), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Summer Lee (D-PA), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) all declined to clap for the president, unlike other Democrats. While most of them stood up as the president entered, Tlaib remained seated.

The donning of the Palestinian keffiyehs was a symbolic act against the president’s support for Israel in the war in Gaza.

The progressive members have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and have been vocal critics of Israel’s military operation in the aftermath of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on the country. They have been critical of Biden’s response to the war.

The president’s handling of the war in Gaza has caused some resistance within the Democratic Party, leading to protest votes in some Democratic primaries.
