Biden pokes fun at own age while speaking to National League of Cities – Washington Examiner

President Joe Biden mocked his age and lengthy civil career on Monday, a clear attempt to undermine the core argument against him by former President Donald Trump and Republicans heading into the 2024 general election.

Biden’s remarks, at his first stop on a packed campaign slate throughout the week, came just days after his 2024 State of the Union. Democrats have pointed to those remarks as clear evidence Biden, at 81 years old, can still perform the duties of office.

“I started off on the county council. That’s where I learned early on that if you want to get something done locally, send it directly to the local officials,” he stated. “Folks, I only ran for the Senate because local governor was too hard.”

On Monday, the president opened his speech at the National League of Cities’s annual conference in Washington, D.C., by repeating lines about his time serving in local government before congratulating members on their century of advocacy.

“One hundred years. Now I want to make it clear, I’ve been a supporter here, but I wasn’t at the first meeting,” Biden continued.

The president will additionally travel Monday afternoon to battleground New Hampshire, where he is expected to reiterate healthcare proposals he outlined during his State of the Union.

And later in the week, Biden will make similar campaign stops in Wisconsin and Michigan, all while hosting bilateral meetings with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the White House on Tuesday, followed by a St. Patrick’s Day visit by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of Ireland on Friday.
