Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) claimed that Attorney General Letitia James is “trying to burn down” the justice system, citing the legal battles that former President Donald Trump is facing from James.
The New York congresswoman was asked about a recent appearance James made at a New York Fire Department promotion ceremony, during which the firefighters in attendance booed James and chanted Trump’s name during her speech. About this recent protest, Malliotakis joked that the firefighters booing James despite any potential blowback are why they are called “New York’s bravest.”
“They’re not afraid to speak their mind either, and look, Letitia James is trying to burn down our justice system, and the firefighters are calling her out on it,” Malliotakis said on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria. “They see what she’s doing, the injustice she’s conducted against President Trump, and they don’t like it.”
Malliotakis also spoke critically of a memo issued by the state fire department, in which FDNY Chief of Department John Hodges informed staff that it was conducting an investigation into who booed James and cheered for Trump. The memo also suggested that those who partook in booing James come forward, as FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told Hodges that coming forward would be better so “we don’t have to hunt them down,” according to a report from the New York Post.
Malliotakis argued that the firefighters were exercising their free speech rights, and that the FDNY should not have invited James to speak in the first place since she is a polarizing figure.

“These firefighters should not be reprimanded, they should not be retaliated against. They’re cheering for someone they like, President Trump, and they were booing somebody they didn’t like. I mean, deal with it,” she added.
Last month, James said that she would go to court and ask a judge to seize Trump’s assets if he is unable to pay his $354 million fine. Trump was given the fine after Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that he inflated his net worth and the net worth of his company in order to get more favorable loan agreements.
