GOP anti-Trump voters launch $50 million campaign blitz but aren’t ‘building a pro-Joe Biden coalition’

Republican Voters Against Trump launched a $50 million campaign spreading messages from voters who previously backed former President Donald Trump but say they never will again.

The campaign features video testimonials from hundreds of former Trump voters and will be aired across various digital media platforms. The ads launched in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — states that former President Donald Trump is leading the Democratic president in.

The campaign’s organizer, Sarah Longwell, the president of Republican Accountability PAC, told the New York Times that while it is encouraging Republican voters not to cast their ballot for the party’s front-runner, it is not “building a pro-Joe Biden coalition.”

“You’re building an anti-Trump coalition,” Longwell said.

Longwell joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday to discuss the voters that the campaign is targeting, which she says is the 30% of Republican voters who aren’t MAGA loyalists. That includes the roughly 30% of Republican voters who supported former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the presidential race after Super Tuesday.

Republican Voters Against Trump ran a similar campaign in 2020, ending with self-recorded videos of GOP voters who backed Trump in 2016 but pledged not to in 2020, per the newspaper.

“The key to Biden’s success in 2024 is the same as it was in the 2020 presidential election: A mobilized and engaged anti-Trump coalition of Democrats, independents, and Republicans who will do everything in their power to defeat Donald Trump,” Gunner Ramer, the political director for this campaign, said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

“Our testimonial campaign includes former Trump supporters who will be supporting Joe Biden, voting third party, or leaving the top of the ticket blank in November. This campaign will undoubtedly help Biden defeat the unique threat to our democracy that is Donald Trump, just like it did in 2020,” Ramer said.
