Trump domination in Ohio isn’t enough to clear field for key Senate contest – Washington Examiner

Former President Donald Trump holds a commanding lead in the presidential race in Ohio, but that success for the GOP does not appear to be carrying over to the Buckeye State’s Senate race.

A poll of registered voters in Ohio from Emerson College and the Hill released on Wednesday shows Trump beating President Joe Biden, 50% to 41%, in the presidential race, but all three leading GOP candidates in the Senate contest trail incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

When Brown is matched against state Sen. Matt Dolan, he leads 37% to 34%, making it the closest of the three possible general election races. Brown also leads in hypothetical matchups with Bernie Moreno, 39% to 34%, and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, 39% to 33%.

In the Republican Senate primary, which is scheduled for next Tuesday, there is no clear leader based on the survey released on Wednesday. Dolan leads the field with 26%, followed by Moreno with 23% and LaRose with 16%, while 32% of those polled said they were undecided.

Moreno has received the most high-profile Republican endorsement, from Trump, and has been endorsed by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH). Dolan has received the backing of Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) and former Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman. LaRose’s most high-profile endorsement came from Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH).

The Senate race in the Buckeye State could decide control of the Senate, with Republicans expected to flip the West Virginia seat held by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and needing one more flip in November to gain a majority in the chamber.

Ohio has traditionally been a swing state in the presidential race but has moved solidly for the GOP in recent elections.

The CookPoliticalReport rated Ohio as a “toss-up” ahead of the 2020 election, with Trump winning the state by 8 percentage points, but four years later, it rated the state as “solid Republican.” For the Senate race, the outlet has rated it as a “toss-up.”
