NYC Mayor Eric Adams says increased subway security is ‘the new norm’ – Washington Examiner

New York City Mayor Eric Adams anticipates continuing to have the National Guard stationed throughout the city’s subway system for the foreseeable future.

The city is a week into its deployment of the National Guard, state troopers, and NYPD officers performing security operations and bag checks. This came as a result of police data on subway crime reporting it is up 13% compared to 2023, with assaults in particular up 11%.

Already, crime has fallen, according to Adams, who appeared on WABC-TV on Friday. As a result, Adams claimed the practice will continue.

“I am saying to the team, we have to now look at what’s the new norm and we have to police to that new norm,” Adams said.

This comes after a shooting incident at Brooklyn’s Hoyt-Schermerhorn Station on Thursday. The involved shooter will not be charged, according to NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, as investigators determined he acted in self-defense. In this case, the shooter, a 32-year-old man, took the gun belonging to the 36-year-old victim after a fight ensued between the two. His victim, who had jumped the turnstile to board the train, was shot four times and remains in critical condition.

Maddrey confirmed that officers will continue to be in subways and issue fines for not paying at the subway turnstiles.
