Miami Beach mayor touts ‘calmest spring break’ in years following police crackdown – Washington Examiner

The mayor of Miami Beach, Florida, described the numerous spring break precautions taken by the city as an overall success, noting a decrease in arrests compared to previous years.

The Florida city has been a popular spring break destination for college students and had been the target of crime. This year, the city and state announced a multitude of precautions it would be taking to lower crime during spring break, such as a curfew and an increased police presence, with Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner noting how many businesses have benefited from these precautions.

“This is the calmest spring break we’ve had in years,” Meiner told Fox News Live. “A number of restaurants that make their business, like traditional restaurants, are actually telling me thank you, that these measures have helped them, it’s kept things safer, calmer, and that they’re actually busier.”

While Meiner noted a few businesses have complained about the midnight curfew implemented in the city, he added that this year’s precautions have been the most the city has ever taken, and it has resulted in a “win-win for everyone.”

Three nightclubs in Miami Beach — M2, Mynt Lounge, and Exchange — tried to challenge the city’s midnight curfew, but their request was denied by a judge on Saturday.

Earlier this month, the city of Miami Beach announced a social media campaign titled “Spring Break Up,” which listed a number of precautions the city was taking to stop lawbreakers, such as parking fees and DUI checkpoints. Likewise, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said earlier this month he had contacted Miami Beach and several other communities across the state to offer them increased state support during the spring break season.

“Make no mistake about it, if you’re coming here in order to enjoy Florida, enjoy to have a good time, fine,” DeSantis said at a press conference in Miami. “If you’re coming for these other reasons, if you’re committing crimes, causing havoc, you are going to pay the price, and we will hold you accountable because that’s what we do here.”

Despite the precautions, various cities in Florida have still had to deal with some crime during spring break, with a shooting in Jacksonville leaving one person dead and three injured on Sunday. Earlier in the month, a brawl broke out between vacationers on the beach in the same city.
