Rep. Dan Kildee’s brother shot and killed in Michigan in alleged domestic incident – Washington Examiner

Rep. Dan Kildee’s (D-MI) brother was shot and killed as part of what police say was a string of crimes committed by the victim’s son early Tuesday.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said police identified Timothy Kildee, 57, as the victim. He was pronounced dead at the scene of a shooting shortly after 5 a.m. in Vienna Township in Michigan.

Timothy Kildee’s son, 27, is believed to be the one who fatally shot his father, according to police. The son was involved in a serious crash occurring shortly after the shooting, and he has not been charged with any crimes while he continues to recover at Hurley Medical Center, per ABC 12 News.

Dan Kildee released a statement on Tuesday shortly after law enforcement announced the death of his brother.

“Our family is grieving and heartbroken,” the congressman said. “There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a tragedy. I thank the community for honoring my family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

According to law enforcement, the fatal shooting was part of a crime spree committed by the victim’s son on Tuesday morning. Police said the suspect went to his birth mother’s home in Burton, Michigan, around 2:50 a.m. and allegedly produced a gun after getting into an argument.

Swanson said the suspect took off on foot before the Burton Police Department could arrive. The suspect later contacted his mother, who is also Timothy Kildee’s ex-wife, and she picked him up at around 5 a.m. and drove him to his father’s home in Vienna Township.

The victim’s son allegedly jumped out of the moving vehicle before she could arrive at Timothy Kildee’s residence. Together, the mother and Timothy Kildee went out to look for the suspect.

Another son of Timothy Kildee’s, who stayed home, told police that he heard his father arrive home alone. Shortly after, the suspect arrived at the Vienna Township home and allegedly engaged in a loud verbal argument with Timothy Kildee, per the local outlet.

The other son heard the suspect ask for Timothy Kildee’s wallet and keys. He then heard a single gunshot and found his father dead.

The suspect had stolen Timothy Kildee’s wallet and pickup truck, according to police. While investigators were responding to the shooting at Vienna Township, reports of a serious crash came in. Police later discovered the crash involved the victim’s son, who was driving the pickup truck at a high speed and crashed into another vehicle, whose occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Dan Kildee has faced several hurdles over the last year. In March 2023, the congressman was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, which is a “serious but curable” form of cancer. He had surgery for a tumor in April of that year, and he announced in May that the cancer was gone.

The Michigan Democrat announced he would not seek reelection in 2024 — delivering a blow to Democrats who hoped the congressman would hold onto his seat as the party works to flip the House majority this fall. His seat is ranked a “toss-up” by Cook Political Report.
