Biden picks up United Steelworkers endorsement days after coming out against US Steel sale – Washington Examiner

The United Steelworkers endorsed President Joe Biden just days after he announced his opposition to the sale of U.S. Steel to a foreign competitor.

“President Biden proved time and again during his first term that he stands with working families,” USW President David McCall said. “His vision and leadership allowed our nation to strengthen workers’ access to collective bargaining, grow the middle class, and embark on a path to widespread prosperity.”

Biden and McCall spoke last week, during which the president reiterated he “has the steelworkers back.”

Both Biden and former president Donald Trump have opposed the sale of U.S. Steel to Japanese firm Nippon Steel, a deal that is under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment. Trump came out against it in December, and Biden joined in last week. McCall has outlined his own concerns with the deal.

The union says it spent months considering the endorsement and surveyed members regarding their “top priorities.” It also sent questionnaires to presidential candidates.

“President Biden, through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Inflation Reduction Act and other pro-worker legislation, is making good on his promise to create good, union jobs and healthier communities across the country,” McCall said in a prepared statement. “Our nation has long needed this sort of sweeping investment. President Biden made it happen.”

Trump established his bona fides by implementing tariffs on China during his term in office, which Biden has mostly kept in place. After winning in 2020, the latter signed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and other legislation that he touts as a boon for American manufacturing.

Biden has locked up the endorsement of most non-police unions, with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters being one of the few remaining holdouts.
