Manchin slams Biden for ‘reckless’ EV mandate telling people ‘what kind of car’ they can have – Washington Examiner

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) bashed President Joe Biden over his “reckless” electric vehicle mandate.

Manchin, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has frequently taken issue with Biden’s green energy policies, with the matter being one of the main rifts between them. On Wednesday, Manchin released a statement on the Environmental Protection Agency finalizing its rule on tailpipe emission standards.

“The federal government has no authority and no right to mandate what type of car or truck Americans can purchase for their everyday lives,” he said. “This reckless and ill-informed rule will impose what is effectively an EV mandate without ensuring the security of our supply chains from nations like China and without a realistic transition plan that addresses our domestic infrastructure needs.”

The new emissions standards are not as severe as first proposed but are still significantly restrictive. While not explicitly mandating a shift toward EVs, the pollution standards would make it nearly impossible for automakers to continue without increasing the share of EVs in their vehicle fleets, as opposed to gas-powered vehicles.

Biden’s green energy policies have served as Manchin’s foremost example of his administration’s leftward shift and led to the falling out between the two.

“He has been pushed so far left it’s unbelievable. And I have been raising hell from day one. Because I’m trying to say — this is not how you’re going to get reelected,” Manchin said last week. “Be the Joe Biden we thought we elected.”
