Slotkin leads close race with Republican challenger for Michigan Senate – Washington Examiner

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) holds a slight edge over former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in a tight race for Michigan‘s Senate seat, according to a new poll.

In a hypothetical faceoff between Slotkin and Rogers, 41% of Michigan voters supported Slotkin, 39% backed Rogers, and 20% were undecided, according to an Emerson College Polling/Hill survey released Thursday.

Rogers, who served seven terms in the House before retiring in 2015, has garnered former President Donald Trump‘s endorsement and the support of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. On the Democratic side, Slotkin, who has outraised her opponents, is expected to win.

The survey, conducted among 1,000 Michigan voters, found that other GOP rivals in the race, such as Sandy Pensler, a businessman, attracted 37% support to Slotkin’s 42% in a hypothetical matchup, with 21% undecided.

Meanwhile, 34% of voters supported former Republican Rep. Peter Meijer compared to Slotkin’s 42%, and 24% said they were undecided. In a possible matchup with former Republican-turned-independent-turned-Republican Rep. Justin Amash, the survey showed the Republican with 35% support, with Slotkin ahead at 43% and 22% of voters undecided.

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who dropped out of the race in February, was the only Republican candidate who had pulled ahead of Slotkin, according to a January poll. The former leading competitor gave his support to Rogers earlier this month.

Since Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced her retirement, several Republicans have jumped into the race, making it a tough competition as the GOP attempts to flip the seat that has been held by Democrats for years. For Democrats, defending Stabenow’s seat will be essential to keep their majority in the Senate. Slotkin’s reputation as a current representative who has won elections to Congress three times could benefit Democrats.

At the same time, in a possible matchup with Slotkin, Rogers’s support from Trump could be just what he needs to cement his win. The power of the former president’s support was put on full display earlier this week when Trump-backed Republican businessman Bernie Moreno won the Ohio GOP primary in a three-way competition, putting him in a stronger position to flip the chamber.
