Pro-Israel Democratic group looking to put third ‘Squad’ member on their list for removal – Washington Examiner

A pro-Israel Democratic group is looking to put a third “Squad” member in the hot seat for her stance on the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.

The Democratic Majority for Israel is targeting several progressive Democrats in the Squad with primary challengers where they can. The group’s president, Mark Mellman, told Politico that Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cori Bush (D-MO) are the most vulnerable to a challenge.

“Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush — those are the two that are the most vulnerable,” Mellman said on the Playbook Deep Dive podcast. “Not just because of this issue, but because they also have other problems, additionally. And because both of them have opponents who are serious elected officials in their own right with substantial constituencies.”

He also discussed how the Squad members they would like to target in primaries, such as Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), do not appear vulnerable, but Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) is one they are looking into.

“The person in the middle is Summer Lee, in Pennsylvania,” he said. “I think it’s hard to know exactly how vulnerable she is at the moment. And we’ll be looking at that.”

The group has primarily targeted Tlaib, who has been the most outspoken, but during Lee’s 2022 primary battle, the Democratic Majority for Israel backed one of her opponents, Steve Irwin. Irwin narrowly lost to Lee in the Democratic primary by less than 1,000 votes.

Lee currently has one Democratic challenger, Bhavini Patel, for the April 23 primary in the Keystone State.

Bowman and Bush both face spirited primary challenges. A poll released in February showed the Missouri Democrat trailing St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, 50% to 28%, in the Democratic primary for her seat.

All three of the members of Congress mentioned as targets by the Democratic Majority for Israel are in safe Democratic seats, meaning a challenge to them on this matter would have to occur in the primary rather than the general election to risk them losing their seats.

The Squad members the group has targeted to be challenged in a primary have been fiercely critical of Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza.
