Mayorkas impeachment creates ‘biggest threat’ of the year for two vulnerable Democrats – Washington Examiner

GOP strategists say Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) are vulnerable with House Speaker Mike Johnson (D-LA) planning to present Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) with two articles of impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas when Congress returns from recess.

A vote against the articles of impeachment would anger a strong base of conservative constituents.

Polls showed that immigration is voters’ top concern this election cycle, and both Tester and Brown live in states Trump won in 2020.

“They’re caught between their base and what the majority of their state wants,” a Senate GOP strategist told the Hill. “I would say it’s the biggest threat to Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester, specifically. It’s a really, really bad issue for them.”

In the House, the first attempt to impeach Mayorkas failed, but the second attempt passed with a 214-213 vote. Three House Republicans voted against the measure.

Republican strategists are already blasting House Democrats who voted against impeaching Mayorkas.

Strategists say while Republicans know that the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas won’t get very far in the Senate, it will be just another example of Senate Democrats’ lax stance on the border and cause political damage.

“The impeachment is both good policy and good politics,” Constantin Querard, a Republican strategist based in Arizona, told the Hill

Johnson, who plans to send the articles of impeachment by April 10, sent a letter to Schumer to notify him.

“If he cares about the Constitution and ending the devastation caused by Biden’s border catastrophe, Sen. Schumer will quickly schedule a full public trial and hear the arguments put forth by our impeachment managers,” Johnson said.

Schumer has called the articles of impeachment “absurd” and may wait until after Election Day to bring it to the Senate floor. However, he plans to hold a vote to dismiss the matter, but that could make Democrats vulnerable to new attacks.
