RFK Jr. campaign claims it has enough signatures for ballot access in North Carolina – Washington Examiner

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.‘s campaign claims it has the required number of signatures necessary to appear on the ballot in North Carolina in November.

Kennedy’s campaign claims it has gathered more than 23,000 signatures and thus has qualified for the North Carolina ballot through its We the People political party. Kennedy has also gathered enough signatures to make the ballot in New Hampshire, Nevada, Utah, and Hawaii.

“We have the field teams, volunteers, legal teams, paid circulators, supporters, and strategists ready to get the job done,” Kennedy campaign press secretary Stefanie Spear said in a statement on Monday.

For Kennedy to appear on the ballot in North Carolina, he will have to get roughly 13,865 signatures — equal to 0.25% of the number of people who voted in the most recent gubernatorial election — to get the We the People Party officially recognized. Then, he will need to get 10,000 votes for his candidacy under that party to appear on the ballot.

The presence of Kennedy on the North Carolina ballot could throw a wrench into the race between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the swing state. Trump narrowly won the state in 2016 and 2020, but Biden’s recent campaign trip to the Tar Heel State indicates the president is making a play to flip the state blue.

Kennedy is performing strongly as a third-party candidate, according to recent polls. A Harvard-Harris national poll from last month shows Trump leading a three-way race with 43%, followed by Biden with 39% and Kennedy with 17%.

In recent presidential elections in North Carolina, the strongest third-party performance came from Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson in 2016, when he garnered 130,126 votes, or 2.74% of the total vote.

A Marist poll released last month showed Kennedy getting 11% of the vote in a three-way race in North Carolina, while Trump gets 46% and Biden gets 43%.
