Indianapolis Colts football player Vontae Davis has died at the age of 35, authorities confirmed Monday.
The former NFL player was found dead at his grandmother’s home in Southwest Ranches, Florida, with police stating that no foul play is suspected to have played a role in his death. During his time with the Colts, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015.
“We are devastated to hear of Vontae Davis’s passing,” a statement from the Indianapolis Colts said. “He was a standout player in his six seasons with the Horseshoe, but he was an even better teammate who carried a smile and positive energy every day. He will be deeply missed, and we send our prayers to his family and loved ones.”
Davis was not immediately identified when police found him dead at his grandmother’s house. University of Illinois assistant coach Chester Frazier assisted the police in identifying Davis. Davis was a member of the Illinois defensive backfield.
Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, issued his own statement on Davis’s death, calling him “a great guy, teammate, player.”

Outside of his time with the Colts, Davis is most known for his short stint with the Buffalo Bills, as he only played one game with the team in 2018 before retiring during the game’s halftime. Davis clarified in a statement that he was unsure if he wanted to continue playing football, and that it was important for him and his family “to walk away healthy” from football.
