Several progressive groups celebrated the successes of protest votes against President Joe Biden in several primaries on Tuesday night.

Thousands of Democratic voters cast their ballots for the “uninstructed” or “uncommitted” choices in Connecticut, Wisconsin, and Rhode Island. Wisconsin saw the highest protest count, with 48,000 voters participating. The voters were likely rejecting Biden over his response to the Israel-Hamas war.

“In Wisconsin alone, nearly 48,000 voters cast an unrestricted ballot in the Democratic presidential primary, far surpassing campaign goals and significantly exceeding President Biden’s margin of victory over Trump in the 2020 general election,” the progressive group Our Revolution said in a news release. “Similarly, in Rhode Island and Connecticut, 15% and 12% of Democratic primary voters marked their ballots as ‘uncommitted,’ further amplifying the call for a bold redirection in policy.”

In Connecticut, just under 8,000 votes, or 11.5% of the total, went to “uncommitted,” and in Rhode Island, another 4,000 votes, or 14.9%, went toward “uncommitted.” The protest movement also saw notable support last month on Super Tuesday. 

“This president must decide if loyalty to Netanyahu is worth delivering Trump the election in November,” progressive activist Nina Turner posted to X. “He must decide.” 

Former President Donald Trump also saw a weaker showing in Wisconsin after former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley received slightly more than 76,000 votes even though she is no longer in the race. The 76,000 votes amounted to 12.8% of the Republican votes cast.

A Biden campaign official weighed in, claiming Trump was Tuesday’s “biggest loser” because of Haley’s support in Wisconsin. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who long ago dropped out of the presidential race, garnered 3.3% of the vote in the swing state.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Biden campaign for further comment.

The votes come after Israel accidentally killed seven aid workers in an airstrike on Monday, including one U.S.-Canadian dual citizen. Israel has accepted responsibility for the airstrike and said it is reviewing the situation to make sure it does not occur again. 

Despite the respective votes against them, Trump and Biden still won their respective primaries in all states.

Trump and Biden are their respective parties’ presumptive nominees for the White House. It remains to be seen whether the protest votes will carry over to the general election.

The candidates will formally secure the nominations at their party’s conferences this summer in Chicago and Milwaukee.
