Louisiana banning prop bets on college athletes after NCAA pleas – Washington Examiner

The Louisiana Gaming Control Board announced that proposition bets on college athletes will be banned in the fall after the NCAA called on states to restrict bets on their athletes’ performances.

Proposition bets, more commonly known as prop bets, are when a wager is made on how an individual athlete will perform, such as betting a player will score more than seven points, or if something will occur during a game. The order from the state board will go into effect on Aug. 1 at 8 a.m. local time, with the state joining Maryland, Ohio, and Vermont, among others, in banning the bets.

“The Louisiana Gaming Control Board is issuing this bulletin to inform Louisiana licensed sports betting operations that proposition bets on an individual athlete’s performance or statistics participating in a college sporting event will be suspended from the Official Sports Betting Catalog,” the order said.

The state will still permit “proposition bets based on full team statistical results,” but not on individual athlete performances for college sports. Prop bets on professional sports will still be permitted in Louisiana.

The move comes weeks after NCAA President Charlie Baker called on states to ban prop bets for student-athletes, claiming athletes were being targeted with threats and harassment from bettors.

“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competitions and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed,” Baker said in a statement last month. “The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop betting.”
