Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is warning the GOP it shouldn’t take his vote for granted as he campaigns to flip a Senate seat in the deep blue state. 

“I want to say this upfront: In the Senate, Republicans can’t count on my vote,” the GOP Senate nominee for Maryland said in a campaign ad released on Tuesday. 

“But then again, neither can Democrats,” Hogan added. “If they want my vote, they will have to do what is right for Maryland, not one political party.” 

Hogan’s campaign told the Washington Examiner in a statement on Tuesday, “The message in this ad shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. For eight years, Gov. Hogan put Maryland first and prioritized the issues that are important to Maryland over party politics or partisan talking points. He will be the same independent leader in the United States Senate.” 

The Maryland centrist politician has attracted national attention for his frequent criticism of former President Donald Trump. After stepping down from the leadership of the third-party movement No Labels last December, Hogan announced he was running as a Republican for Maryland’s Senate seat. A GOP win would hand Republicans their first Senate win in the state in 37 years. 

In April, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) announced he was retiring at the end of his term, adding the traditionally deep blue state to the list of potentially competitive Senate races in 2024.

After winning the Republican primary on May 14 by a wide margin, Hogan made it a point to extend an olive branch to Democrats. In addition to calling himself a “pro-choice” lawmaker, he launched “Democrats for Hogan,” an initiative he also pushed before his 2018 reelection. 

Hogan is set to face off against the Democratic nominee, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, in November.
