Los Angeles County residents who are part of a guaranteed income program will receive their monthly $1,000 payment in seven days.
Recipients of Breathe, a pilot program, are all former Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services foster youth between the ages of 21 and 23. The program is intended to provide households with “financial stability” without work requirements.

One thousand participants were selected to receive $1,000 per month for three years from Breathe, and an additional 200 people were chosen to receive $1,000 per month for two years.
Payments are sent on the 15th of each month, L.A. County’s Strength Based Community Change agency told the Washington Examiner.
Applications for Breathe opened on March 31, 2022, and they closed on April 13, 2022. Applications for the expansion for an additional 200 recipients opened on June 20 and closed on July 3.
The first payments were issued in June 2022 and will cease in August 2025. The next payment will arrive on Sept. 15.

The program seeks to help recipients “during sharp economic swings to breathe a little easier, alleviate stress, and broaden recipients’ horizons, allowing them the time to complete deferred education and job training, as well as plans to fully participate in their communities,” according to the program’s website.
