Trump won’t say ‘abortion’ in speech to anti-abortion group – Washington Examiner

Former President Donald Trump will largely steer clear of abortion in his brief remarks to a Christian group that opposes the procedure on Monday.

In a two-minute virtual address to the Danbury Institute, the former president made a passing reference to defending “innocent life” after the Biden campaign criticized him for speaking to the organization but otherwise avoided abortion, a political flashpoint in the presidential race.

“We have to defend religious liberty, free speech, innocent life, and the heritage and traditions that built America into the greatest nation in the history of the world,” Trump will say in a prerecorded video, according to remarks obtained by the Washington Examiner.

“I know that each of you is protecting those values every day — and I hope we’ll be defending them side by side for the next four years,” Trump will also say to attendees of the sold-out forum in Indianapolis, hosted in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention.

It’s the latest sign of the tightrope Trump is walking on a topic that Democrats have used to put Republicans on defense in the two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The former president has touted the role he played in appointing the justices that reversed the decision but simultaneously has sought to neutralize it as a campaign issue by announcing in April that restrictions should be left up to the states.

The Danbury Institute, meanwhile, is unequivocal in its opposition to abortion. “More than 60 million pre-born humans — each wonderfully made in the image of God — have been murdered on our watch,” its website reads. “Abortion must be ended. We will not rest until it is eradicated entirely.”

Democrats have seized on the balancing act by Republicans, especially in battleground districts and states, in a bid to paint them as anti-woman. The House Majority PAC announced a $100 million campaign to galvanize voters around abortion access to help Democrats take back control of the GOP-led House.

At the presidential level, President Joe Biden’s campaign slammed Trump for addressing the forum in a statement released to reporters.

“If you want to know who Trump will fight for in a second term, look at who he’s spending his time speaking to: anti-abortion extremists who call abortion ‘child sacrifice’ and want to ‘eradicate’ abortion ‘entirely,’” Biden spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika said.
