Aaron Rodgers calls Travis Kelce ‘Mr. Pfizer’ in wake of COVID-19 vaccine ad

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has a new nickname for Travis Kelce, which ties into a recent ad the Kansas City Chiefs tight end did promoting the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19.

Rodgers, currently sidelined after tearing his Achilles tendon in week one, dropped the nickname during an interview Tuesday. That followed the Jets 23-20 loss to the Chiefs. Kelce recently appeared in an ad encouraging viewers to get the latest COVID-19 vaccine while receiving a flu shot.

“Our defense played really well, and Mr. Pfizer didn’t have a crazy impact on the game,” Rodgers said in the interview.

Rodgers’s new nickname for Kelce comes after he made headlines in 2021 when he initially claimed in an interview that he was “immunized” from COVID-19, leading some to believe he had received a vaccination. He later stated that he had not received the vaccine, acknowledging his comments were “misleading.”

Kelce’s ad for Pfizer was shared on social media, though comments on the post were turned off. Kelce’s social media post also stated the ad is “for U.S. residents only” and is meant to be viewed “as it was originally produced in partnership with Pfizer.”

Beyond Pfizer, Kelce also appeared in an ad for Bud Light, which was released as the brand attempted a comeback on social media over controversy caused by a partnership it did with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney in March.

Rodgers’s new nickname comes a day after Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman, the two scientists whose work led to the creation of the COVID-19 vaccine, were awarded a Nobel Prize for their work. Both Pfizer and Moderna used their work to develop their vaccines against COVID-19.
