AbleChild’s Pioneering Transparency in Psychiatric Drug Autopsy Testing Featured in Wyoming Media

The recent article from Cowboy State Daily on the tragic case of the Byron, Wyoming mother who killed her four children and herself powerfully highlights the urgent need for transparency in psychiatric drug use and testing. This heartbreaking incident, involving a cocktail of drugs including ketamine and clonazepam, underscores the critical gaps the medical and legal systems face in understanding how psychiatric medications contribute to violent deaths. AbleChild commends the article for bringing this issue to public attention and has been actively working in Wyoming and beyond to demand accountability and safety in prescribing these drug cocktails, especially for vulnerable populations like mothers and children in state care.

Building on these efforts, AbleChild spearheaded the first law in Tennessee following a mass shooting that mandates toxicology testing for therapeutic levels of psychotropic drugs in autopsies of deceased mass shooters. This landmark legislation breaks new ground by requiring medical examiners to include detailed drug testing in death investigations, expanding knowledge about how psychiatric drugs may influence violent behaviors.

Furthermore, AbleChild extends its advocacy to spotlighting the cocktail of psychiatric drugs prescribed to children in state care (exploding in medicaid) and mothers undergoing psychiatric treatment, highlighting the necessity for reforms that strengthen medical examiners’ offices and uphold human rights in psychiatric drug oversight. Through legislative advocacy and public awareness, AbleChild is calling for transparency and accountability where psychiatric drug involvement in deaths has been historically ignored.​
