Al Sharpton pushes Karine Jean-Pierre on abortion and race relations ahead of State of the Union – Washington Examiner

The Rev. Al Sharpton pushed White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday on how President Joe Biden plans to address abortion and race relations in his fourth State of the Union address.

“Two of the issues that are burning in this country, among others, are the right of women to choose and where we are in terms of the racial gaps in this country,” Sharpton said while speaking with Jean-Pierre on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Sharpton acknowledged Biden’s “stern” abortion-rights positions and his efforts to close the race gap between white and black people, but he also asked Jean-Pierre how the president will build on previous State of the Union addresses to discuss these matters, as abortion-rights voters feel under attack and black people appear to have become “less than enthusiastic about his campaign.”

“Look, you’re going to hear the president address how our democracy is under attack, how our freedoms are certainly under attack,” Jean-Pierre said. “He’s going to speak to what we’ve been seeing across the country as it relates to women’s healthcare and the radical, extreme bills that we’re seeing on abortion, on IVF.”

“You’re gonna hear the president be very loud and clear about that, and we know that voting rights is an issue the president has spoken to, has spoken to very clearly, even took an executive action very early on in his administration to see what we can do on the federal level to … make it easier for folks to vote.”

Biden has long pushed the narrative that he first decided to run for the presidency to help rescue the soul of the nation, and Jean-Pierre continued to push that narrative with Sharpton.

“That didn’t end with the president being elected, obviously, in 2020. That continues,” she said. “That continues, and it is important for this president to continue to talk about our freedoms and how they are under attack.”

“You’re gonna see whose side he’s on,” she added. “He’s on the side of the American people. He’s going to continue to fight for the American people, and tonight’s gonna be a really important night.”
