Dolton, Illinois, Mayor Tiffany Henyard, dubbed “America’s worst mayor,” spent $85,000 on a party for the suburban Chicago village while she faces an investigation for taxpayer-funded expenditures.
Henyard spent $50,000 in taxpayers’ money on one hour of entertainment from two musical artists and then over $35,000 on other costs such as staff, activities, and equipment, according to WGN-9.
The event did not have a high turnout, according to former Dolton trustee Valeria Stubbs. “That was a flop,” she said.
Contracts for many of the event’s arrangements were reportedly signed before the village’s trustees had put limits on spending. Henyard has come under intense scrutiny for her spending practices in the past, which led to the Dolton Board of Trustees banning her from using village credit cards last month except for “board-approved purchases.”
Illinois’s comptroller also recently cut off Henyard’s access to state funds.
Dolton hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot at $400 an hour to investigate Henyard’s “excessive and unauthorized use of village funds.”
Lightfoot’s findings revealed that since Henyard became mayor in 2021, the town has found itself in a $3.6 million deficit.
