Ami Bera calls on colleagues to fight third Trump term – Washington Examiner

Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) is reacting to speculation that President Donald Trump could run for a third term.

Trump has acknowledged that the many supporters who want him to run for a third term have “methods” to facilitate their goal. One way would be for his current Vice President, JD Vance, to win the office in 2028 and return it to Trump or to amend the Constitution, as Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has suggested. Per the Constitution, a U.S. president can only serve two terms.

“You know, he has shown that he doesn’t really care about the Constitution, so we better take his threat of a third term really seriously,” Bera said of Trump on CNN News Central Monday. “We as Democrats and Republicans ought to come together, hold them to the Constitution, and make sure this doesn‘t happen. But again, I would take him at his word.”

Bera directed a comment at Ogles since he filed a House Joint Resolution to amend the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

“Stop kowtowing to the president. And actually, let’s uphold the Constitution and do what’s right,” Bera said.

An amendment change would require a two-thirds majority vote in Congress, which the Republicans currently do not hold. Instead, they have a slim majority in the House with 218 seats versus 213 and a majority in the Senate of 53 seats in the 100-seat chamber.
