Army veteran Sam Brown hauls in $1.1 million in quest to oust Senate Democrat Jacky Rosen

EXCLUSIVE — Retired Army Capt. Sam Brown, a Republican, raked in over $1.1 million between July and September for his 2024 Nevada Senate bid to unseat Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), according to fundraising figures shared with the Washington Examiner.

Brown announced his campaign on July 10 after losing in the 2022 GOP primary to ex-Attorney General Adam Laxalt, who in April became chairman of the super PAC Never Back Down boosting the presidential campaign of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). Now, flush with $938,000 in cash on hand and endorsements from Senate Republican leadership, Brown is looking to ride primary momentum to the general and, perhaps, all the way to the upper chamber.

“I’m grateful that our grassroots network of supporters here in Nevada and across America are united and sending a powerful message to the career politicians that our movement, and our mission, is unstoppable,” the veteran, who in 2008 sustained burns in Afghanistan from an improvised explosive device, told the Washington Examiner. “Together, we will end Joe Biden’s American nightmare, his reckless assault on our economy, and we will restore the American Dream for all.”

Brown’s haul this quarter was the second highest for a non-incumbent Republican Senate candidate in the country behind Tim Sheehy in Montana, who announced raising over $2.8 million to unseat Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), according to a Republican source familiar with the latest figures. Rosen, however, will soon report raising $2.7 million and $8.8 million in cash on hand.

Rosen’s seat leans blue in 2024, according to the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan elections tracker. Republicans recruited Brown, a Purple Heart recipient, to run in 2024 in the fallout of the lack of a “red wave” in the 2022 midterm elections. Laxalt went on to lose by about 7,900 votes to Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV).

In the third quarter, Brown had 12,500 donors in all 50 states, who gave an average of $43, his campaign said. He’s been endorsed by Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), for instance. Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) personally encouraged Brown to run, the Washington Examiner reported.

Sam Brown is Mitch McConnell’s handpicked candidate and the favorite of Republican billionaires and D.C. politicians, but no amount of money can change the fact that he’s too extreme for Nevada,” said Stewart Boss, campaign manager for Rosen.

The Nevada GOP Senate primary also includes ex-U.S. ambassador to Iceland Jeff Gunter, ex-Air Force Lt. Col. Tony Grady, and former Nevada secretary of state hopeful Jim Marchant.

A late August survey by a Brown-allied group found the veteran had significantly more name recognition than other primary candidates, though only 4% more than Marchant. Brown clocked in at 33% support, while Marchant held 15%, according to the poll.

“Sam Brown is a top recruit and he had a great first fundraising quarter,” NRSC spokeswoman Maggie Abboud told the Washington Examiner. “Sam is well-positioned to defeat Jacky Rosen next November.”
