Arnold Schwarzenegger hopes US finds ‘some really young blood’ in next president

October 25, 2023 02:50 PM

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has expressed hope that voters will try to find some “young blood” in the next presidential election, thinking it is “a little bit odd” that older people are the top candidates for 2024.

Schwarzenegger’s comment comes as former President Donald Trump, 77, is running for president again and is currently leading the Republican Party’s primary election despite competition from other candidates. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden, 80, is seeking reelection in 2024, setting up a potential rematch between him and Trump.

“I just hope that America finds some really young blood,” Schwarzenegger said in a new interview. “Because to me, it is a little bit odd that we are having a battle between people today in the late 70s and early 80s rather than people that in the 40s and 50s or maybe even younger and have them have a chance at this great, great job.”

A majority of voters, 61%, support introducing an age limit for presidential candidates, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released last month.

Schwarzenegger was also asked how he felt about not being able to run for president himself, as a candidate is required to have been born in the U.S. to run for president, and Schwarzenegger was born in Austria. The former Hollywood superstar believed that he would have been “a great president,” but acknowledged that all he was able to accomplish in his life was “because of America.”

“America gave me so many opportunities and the American people were so embracive, and they just received me with open arms,” Schwarzenegger said. “There was no one there that stopped me from my success. So the only thing that I can’t do, which is run for president, I’m not going to complain about that.”

Earlier this year, the Terminator actor said that it is a “no-brainer” for Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to run for president in the future. It has been speculated for a couple of years that Newsom, 56, could potentially be the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee in the event Biden decided to withdraw from the 2024 election.

In a recently released podcast episode, Schwarzenegger was asked what he thought about Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 69, running for president, with the former governor saying he thought it was “great” and that he believes Kennedy “has it in his blood to create a better country and to become president.”
