Belief in Santa takes dramatic dive in 2023

Belief in Santa Claus fell sharply in 2023 in New York.

A mere 26% of residents believe in jolly St. Nick, compared to 36% in 2022, according to a Siena College survey.

Not only is that a 10-point drop from last year, but it also represents an all-time low for Siena polling.

The 2023 statistics may have surprised pollsters who reported dramatic upward signs of belief in Santa in their 2021 and 2022 surveys.

Belief in Santa Claus seems to correlate directly with New Yorkers’ excitement regarding the holidays and the number of people who have Christmas trees in their homes, according to the poll.

The number who reported being excited about the holiday season is down from 59% in 2020 and even further down from 2021 and 2022, when it was 78%.

Across the nation, things do not appear to be faring better for dear Santa Claus.

Most Oregonians cease to believe in Santa Claus at the age of 5 or 6, leaving 4-year-olds to hold the line of belief, according to another report.

Time will only tell if belief in Santa will rise.
