Bernie Moreno slams Sherrod Brown for ‘covering up’ Biden’s ‘mental decline’ – Washington Examiner

Ohio Senate hopeful Bernie Moreno accused Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) of being part of a “political cover-up” of President Joe Biden’s mental decline during an impromptu press conference in front of Brown’s Senate office on Thursday.

Moreno came to Capitol Hill with White House logs showing the Ohio senator visited the White House seven times between February 2021 and December 2022.

“Sherrod Brown has been very, very close personal friends with Joe Biden for decades. He knew that Joe Biden was in cognitive decline,” Moreno said, speaking to a gaggle of reporters. “It took George Clooney a couple of hours to figure that out three weeks ago, Sherrod Brown has known for years.”

Brown is perhaps one of the most vulnerable red-state Democrats this cycle, holding on to a key Democratic seat in Ohio as the party faces an uphill climb to keep their Senate majority.

Moreno is embracing a strategy utilized by Republicans in both chambers, targeting Democrats up for reelection who have previously downplayed concerns about Biden’s fitness for office in an effort to help the GOP pick up seats this fall.

“This guy is a coward and now he’s hiding from his lies because he knows the gig is up — that people have seen what you can’t unsee and it’s a disgrace, it’s a shame,” Moreno said. “He is a superdelegate, let me remind you, he’s a superdelegate. He refuses to take a position on where he stands with Biden.”

Moreno downplayed the fact that White House logs show Brown’s visits occurred over a year ago.

“I think a lot of people have had their parents and grandparents go through this. It’s terrible to watch,” Moreno said. “This is a steady decline that happens.”

THE PROMINENT DEMOCRATS CALLING ON BIDEN TO DROP OUT

The Ohio senator has been vague when asked by reporters about whether Biden should be at the top of the ticket, but has admitted that his constituents have “legitimate concerns.”

“My job is to listen to people’s concerns about the president, and I will continue to work for my state,” Brown said to reporters on Wednesday.

However, Brown along with Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) had reportedly raised concerns about Biden’s chance of winning against former President Donald Trump in November. Although, he has not expanded on those comments publicly.

Moreno called on Brown to take a position on whether Biden should remain the Democratic nominee publicly.

“He should fess up to the conspiracy, the cover-up, and then take a position on whether he’s going to continue to ride with Biden,” Moreno said.

Moreno’s visit to Capitol Hill comes as Brown’s campaign told Axios he raised $12.8 million in the second quarter of the year on Thursday. During the first quarter he raised $12.1 million, nearly six times more than Moreno at that time.

Major donors have indicated that they will start to pour more investments into congressional races after Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump. According to polling averages, Brown is leading Moreno by 5.2 points. Democrats and the independents who caucus with them hold a narrow 51-seat majority in the chamber. Of the Senate Democrats up for reelection, seven are in states that went for Trump in 2016, 2020, or both.
