President Joe Biden has pledged to back a funding deal to avoid a government shutdown.

Congressional negotiators hammered out a deal to complete their final spending bill on Monday night, and aides are now writing the text of a bill to keep the government open.

“We have come to an agreement with congressional leaders on a path forward for the remaining full-year funding bills,” Biden said. “The House and Senate are now working to finalize a package that can quickly be brought to the floor, and I will sign it immediately.”

After days of lengthy negotiations and disagreements, especially over border security, lawmakers agreed on how to allocate funds for the Department of Homeland Security late Monday, one day after they initially hoped to have the bills published.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has pledged his support for the deal.

“An agreement has been reached for DHS appropriations, which will allow completion of the FY24 appropriations process,” Johnson said. “House and Senate committees have begun drafting bill text to be prepared for release and consideration by the full House and Senate as soon as possible.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) also backed the new funding.

“I commend ranking member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and the appropriations committee for their leadership and hard work over the last several weeks,” Jeffries said. “In the next few days, upon completion of the drafting process, Congress will review and consider the appropriations package in order to fund the government and meet the needs of hardworking American taxpayers.”

Lawmakers have just four working days to pass spending legislation through both chambers of Congress.
