Biden concedes House speakership fight jeopardizes Ukraine funding: ‘It does worry me’

President Joe Biden previewed a major foreign policy address in which he plans to appeal to House Republicans over support for Ukraine.

It is “overwhelmingly” in the interest of the United States to continue sending security and humanitarian assistance to Kyiv to help the war-torn country after Russia‘s invasion, according to Biden.

“I’m going to be announcing very shortly a major speech I’m going to make on [Ukraine] and why it’s critically important for the United States and our allies that we keep our commitment,” he told reporters Wednesday after remarks concerning his latest student loan debt forgiveness proposal.

“It does worry me, but I know there is a majority of members of the House and Senate of both parties who have said that they support funding Ukraine,” he also said.

Biden’s announcement comes as money for Ukraine is set to become a litmus test in the House Republican speakership race after eight members of the GOP conference, along with the chamber’s Democrats, pushed out Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). House Republicans are imploring the president to provide more details on his administration’s strategy related to Ukraine.

“There’s another means where we may be able to find funding,” Biden said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) have already declared their candidacies for speaker. A Jordan spokesperson earlier Wednesday clarified comments he made with respect to Ukraine, saying the lawmaker was seeking more information about Biden’s long-term thinking.
