Biden fundraising in Trump’s backyard while Democrats write off hopes to win there

President Joe Biden is taking his fundraising efforts for his 2024 reelection bid to the heart of former President Donald Trump’s campaign, making stops in South Florida despite Democratic reservations about succeeding in the GOP stronghold.

Top fundraisers are hosting the Democratic president in Miami and Palm Beach, in the same territory as Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Chris Korge, the national finance chair of the Biden Victory Fund and finance chair of the Democratic National Committee, is among the hosts in Miami, according to the Miami Herald.

Biden operatives are focused on raising big bucks in the state that has brought in millions for Trump — the Miami Herald reports the Democratic president’s Miami event will cost $3,300 per person and up to $250,000 for co-chair tickets.

Democrats have struggled to win key state races and build their voter base in Florida, and operatives have seemingly accepted the purple-turned-red state would be a near impossible win for Biden. Trump won with 51.2% of the vote in 2020.

“It’s the nation’s ATM,” a national Democratic operative told Politico. “Democrats are going to go there to raise money — as they should. … And they’re going to take that money and they’re going to invest it in states that are actually competitive, unlike Florida.”

Florida was once considered a swing state, but underwent political shifts over the years, which Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) takes credit for — touting his 19-point reelection victory in 2022 as the nail in the coffin ending the state’s purple status. Republicans have had more success in winning statewide offices and holding control of the state legislature — besides a few Democratic outliers such as Tom Keen flipping state House District 35 blue in a special election this month.

Florida Democrats are reaching historic lows in voter registration; Republicans make up around 5.1 million voters of the nearly 14 million total voters, while Democrats make up about 4.4 million, according to this month’s figures from the Division of Elections.

When asked about Florida in terms of Biden’s path to 270 electoral votes needed to win in November,  campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said the state is “an important contrast state for us that we can uplift as MAGA, unpopular and extreme.”
