Biden hasn’t calmed the fears of key voter bloc in Michigan

President Joe Biden’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas is causing him to face intense unrest among a critical group of Michigan voters he will need to secure if he is going to champion the swing state.

In order to fend off former President Donald Trump, Biden will need to win Michigan, but that could pose a challenge as the state has a large Arab and Muslim population who are outraged over his response to the overseas conflict. Adam Abusalah, a former field organizer for Biden’s 2020 campaign who focused specifically on Michigan’s Arab American voters, told CNN many will not be casting their vote for Biden. When asked if refraining from voting for Biden would help Trump come out on top, Abusalah said it will.

“They’re telling us that as Arab Americans and Muslim Americans, as minority communities who are not supporting Biden, that we are the reason we are going to get another four years of Donald Trump,” Abusalah said. “But the reality is, Joe Biden is the reason that we’re going to get another four years of Donald Trump.”

Abusalah added that leaders within the community were encouraging Arab American and Muslim American voters to write in “uncommitted” on the state’s Feb. 27 primary ballots, showing their frustration over Biden’s response to the war between Israel and Hamas.

Biden’s 2020 “blue wall” consisting of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania was a part of his success that won him the presidency four years ago and will be essential for him to maintain in order to be elected for a second term. In 2020, Biden beat Trump by 154,000 votes in the swing state of Michigan, with 64% of Muslims voting for Biden, according to an Associated Press poll.

Biden claims “unconditional support” for Israel while also showing his support for the Palestinians and being accused by some Democrats of not doing enough to address Islamophobia. Michigan Democratic state Rep. Alabas Farhat told NBC News last year that the president will have to do more to rebuild trust in the Muslim and Arab communities.

“Joe Biden has single-handedly alienated almost every Arab American and Muslim American voter in Michigan,” Farhat said. “I think there’s going to be a lot of people that remember when you won Michigan years ago by a razor-thin margin, when you won Georgia with a razor-thin margin, when you won Arizona by a razor-thin margin — do not be surprised if there are consequences for your actions.”

Biden is visiting Michigan this week in an attempt to win over the key voting group after signing an executive order Thursday that would impose sanctions against Israeli settlers in the West Bank who attack Palestinians.
