Biden jokes he sometimes wishes he was ‘cognitively impaired’ – Washington Examiner

President Joe Biden cracked a joke about wishing sometimes that he was “cognitively impaired” following his State of the Union address on Thursday night.

As Biden made his way through the House chamber after delivering his remarks, he spoke with several members of Congress. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) remarked that “nobody’s going to talk about cognitively impaired now,” referring to Biden’s energy throughout the more than hourlong speech.

“I kind of wish sometimes I was cognitively impaired,” Biden jokingly replied.

Biden’s third State of the Union address, but his fourth address to a joint session of Congress, included several off-the-cuff moments and interactions with hecklers as the president attempted to dispel notions of cognitive decline.

Biden’s age and mental acuity have come into question in recent years as the president has had several gaffes and awkward moments. Special counsel Robert Hur released a report last month declining to prosecute Biden for his alleged mishandling of classified documents, provided a damning assessment of the president’s mental state, and detailed his alleged “poor memory.”

During events in recent months, Biden, 81, has frozen up or made errors, such as confusing the presidents of Egypt and Mexico when discussing the war in Gaza.

During his State of the Union address, he delivered a largely sharp performance but did appear to confuse Laken Riley’s name for “Lincoln Riley” when mentioning the woman who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant. The moment was unscripted and came as a surprise to Republicans who had been calling for Biden to say her name.
