President Joe Biden received a $200,000 payment from his brother on the same day one of James Biden‘s business ventures loaned him the same amount, according to a bank document revealed Friday by the House Oversight Committee.
The document represents the first piece of direct evidence that Joe Biden benefited from the private business of his family members, something he has long denied.

Arriving in March 2018, the $200,000 check from James Biden and his wife Sara Biden came when Joe Biden was not in or seeking office and was earning significant income from paid speeches and his book. Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden earned more than $4 million in 2018, according to their tax return.
It is unclear why James Biden sent the money. At the time, he was working with a rural hospital operating company called Americore, which filed for bankruptcy in December 2019.
A complaint filed last year in bankruptcy court showed that James Biden received $600,000 in wire transfers that Americore had labeled as loans. The first transfer, for $400,000, came in January 2018, and the second transfer, for $200,000, came on March 1, 2018.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said the $200,000 payment landed in the personal bank account of James Biden and Sara Biden, not their business account, and that the couple passed it on to Joe Biden in the form of a personal check later in the day on March 1, 2018.
Americore lawyers believed James Biden had exploited his brother’s political power to sell himself as a valuable asset to the hospital company.
According to the bankruptcy court complaint, James Biden “procured the $600,000.00 in loans from Americore Health (the ‘Loans’) based upon representations that his last name, ‘Biden,’ could ‘open doors’ and that he could obtain a large investment from the Middle East based on his political connections.”
James Biden appears to have settled last year with Americore by agreeing to pay back $350,000.
Americore was far from the only business in which James Biden was involved.
Also in 2018, Hunter Biden and James Biden were attempting to develop a business relationship in China that ultimately caught the eye of FBI and IRS investigators.
Multiple witnesses have presented evidence that Joe Biden met with Chinese executives on at least two occasions at the request of his son, and witnesses have said Joe Biden had intended to profit financially from the Chinese venture had he opted not to seek the White House.

Comer said in a video posted to social media on Friday that the payment from James Biden to his brother raised important questions.
“James Biden wrote this check to Joe Biden as a loan repayment. Americore, a distressed company, loaned money to James Biden, who then sent it to Joe Biden,” Comer said. “Even if this was a personal loan repayment, it’s still troubling that Joe Biden’s ability to be paid back by his brother depended on the success of his family’s shady financial dealings.”
