Biden rendered nearly speechless at White House reacting to Trump’s NATO comments – Washington Examiner

President Joe Biden heartily criticized former President Donald Trump Friday at the White House for suggesting that Russia be allowed to invade NATO countries should they not meet their minimum defense spending benchmarks.

Trump, the likely 2024 Republican presidential nominee, has recently told supporters that he would recommend the United States not come to the aid of any countries invaded by another nation unless those allies meet the 2% GDP defense spending commitments. Currently, roughly only half of NATO signatories fall under that category.

“We have to realize what we’re dealing with, with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. All of us should reject the dangerous statements made by the previous president that invited Russia to invade our NATO allies if they weren’t paying up,” Biden said in remarks responding to the death of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He said if an ally did not pay their dues, he encouraged Russia to quote ‘do whatever the hell they want.’”

The president then paused for several seconds and appeared to stumble over his words while masking his anger. He then collected his thoughts and continued.

“I guess I should clear my mind a little bit and not say what I’m really thinking. Let me clear. This is an outrageous thing for a president to say. I can’t fathom — can’t fathom,” he added, claiming that past presidents would be “rolling over in their graves” hearing this.

“America stands by our sacred commitment to our NATO allies, as they have stood by their commitments to us repeatedly,” Biden stated forcefully. “The United States will defend every inch of NATO territory. Now’s the time for even greater unity among our NATO allies to stand up to the threat that Putin’s Russia poses.”
