A progressive advocacy group is throwing its weight behind a movement to vote uncommitted in Michigan’s Democratic primary in an effort to pressure President Joe Biden to change his stance on the Israel-Hamas war.
Our Revolution, an organization founded by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in 2016, is mobilizing to attempt to change the result of the Feb. 27 primary, expressing voter displeasure by boosting the uncommitted vote. The organization is planning to send 87,000 emails to Michigan members and 225,000 to supporters in other states to try and “push Biden to change course on Gaza now,” according to the New York Times.
Former Democratic Rep. Andy Levin said the effort is intended to help Biden, warning that a failure to change course on the war could cost him the election.
“I am working with some people who feel like they will never vote for Joe Biden, but there are many, many, many I feel will vote for Joe Biden on Nov. 5 if he changes course,” he said. “This is the best way I can help Joe Biden.”
Michigan has one of the largest Muslim populations percentagewise in the country — although at only about 2%, they can exert considerable influence by withholding their vote for Biden in the critical swing state.
Larry Cohen, Our Revolution’s chairman, said he hoped to sway at least 10% of the vote to undecided. With no major competition for Biden, a considerable percentage may have the capacity to change Biden’s calculus regarding his support for Israel.

Progressive Democrats and Muslims in the United States have been outraged at Biden’s staunch support for Israel, threatening to withhold their vote in 2024 if he doesn’t change course. Our Revolution’s mobilization is one of the first organized electoral attempts to make frustrations over the Israel-Hamas war known.
A poll surveying Arab Americans in October found that those planning to vote for Biden plummeted from 59% in 2020 to just 17%, largely in response to Biden’s support for Israel.
