The Texas woman at the center of a briefly granted and revoked abortion case is scheduled to attend the State of the Union address as a guest of President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden on March 7.
When Kate Cox‘s case was denied by the Texas Supreme Court, she traveled out of state to undergo an abortion. Doctors diagnosed Cox’s baby with trisomy 18, a condition that triples the 18th chromosome in the DNA. Cox was the first woman actively seeking an abortion via the court system since before Roe v. Wade.
Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are using their abortion-rights stance to rally voters, especially young women, to support their reelection campaign. Harris has begun a nationwide tour to support that effort.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a press conference on Wednesday that Cox received a call from the president and Jill Biden on Sunday.

“They thanked her for her courage in sharing her story and speaking out about the impact of the extreme abortion ban in Texas,” Jean-Pierre said. “The first lady invited Kate to join her as a guest at the State of the Union, and Kate accepted, so those are ways that you’re going to hear the president lift up those very personal stories.”
Joe Biden and Harris have also met with Amanda Zurawski, who is from Texas. She is one of 20 women claiming she was denied an abortion despite pregnancy complications. The Texas Supreme Court has already heard the oral arguments on both sides in Zurawski v. State of Texas and is now considering its decision.
