Biden to survey Baltimore bridge collapse damage next week – Washington Examiner

President Joe Biden will travel to Baltimore next week, days after a containership crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.

Biden told reporters who accompanied him to New York for this week’s fundraiser with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton that he would be in Baltimore “next week” with Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD).

Biden has been previously criticized for not visiting other disaster sites quickly, including East Palestine, Ohio, after last year’s toxic train derailment.

But White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had previewed that he would go “when it is the appropriate time on the ground” so as not to “get in the way.”

Maryland will receive initial emergency relief of $60 million, but Jean-Pierre did not have any more details this week when asked when the administration will be making another supplemental funding request to Congress.

“As you heard from the president, we’re going to do everything that we can,” she told reporters en route to New York. “The federal government is going to be there for the city of Baltimore, state of Maryland, to make sure that we get that bridge going, built back up. Obviously, we’re going to ask Congress. We’re expecting Congress to act.”

The White House has not confirmed whether Biden has reached out to the families of the six workers killed when the Singapore-flagged Dali crashed into the bridge. Two of their bodies have been recovered, while the rest remain missing. Recording data from the ship has been found, which will help what is expected to be an up to two-year investigation into the incident.
