Biden trailing Trump in five key battleground states: Poll

November 05, 2023 12:59 PM

President Joe Biden is behind former President Donald Trump in five of the six leading battleground states, according to a new poll.

Trump’s lead in the states was significant, ranging from three to 10 percentage points. Results from a new poll by the New York Times and Siena College found the former president emerging triumphant over his rival in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Biden leads only in Wisconsin by just two percentage points.

The poll is the best showing for Trump in a national poll since leaving office, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with the Biden administration amid a series of crises.

The results also reflect the continuing breakdown in the minority coalition that helped hand the Democrats victory in 2020, with several formerly solid Democratic demographics showing heavy signs of fatigue. Support for Biden among registered 18 to 29-year-olds is now just one percentage point greater than Trump; support among black Americans is at an all-time low for Biden but at an all-time-high for Trump; and Trump’s support among Hispanics is just eight percentage points behind Biden.

While Democrats have long relied on minority voters to get them past the finish line, the new poll found that the more diverse the swing state, the further Biden was behind Trump, according to the New York Times. Biden only led in the most white of the six battleground states — Wisconsin.

If the results from the poll were the same on Election Day, Trump would be on track to win more than 300 electoral points, the New York Times reported.

One of the major reasons for Trump’s success in the poll was a feeling from voters that his policies had helped them personally, while those of Biden had hurt them. Voters gave Trump a 17-point advantage for helping them personally while giving Biden an 18-point disadvantage for having hurt them personally.
